Sometimes me think, ‘What is friend?’ and then me say, ‘Friend is someone to share last cookie with.’  – Cookie Monster

Fortunately for you and your friend, you will not have to share your last cookie. By the end of this workshop, you will have 13 beautifully decorated and wrapped cookies to share.

Learn the “outline” and “flood” techniques to ice cutout cookies. Discover shortcuts, gather tips and take home recipes. Create personalized, bakery-style cookies and wrap them individually to give as gifts. Remember, Valentine’s Day is right around the corner…

Supplies will be available for you to decorate “emoji” cookies (in addition to heart designs). These simple, yet wonderfully whimsical cookies, delight everyone. Believe it or not, custom cookies like these sell for up to $54/dozen.

End the afternoon with a party: coffee, tea (and milk and cookies, of course!)

Slurry. Moulds. Deckles. Beating. Couching. Learn to make paper and expand your vocabulary and at the same time!

This hands-on workshop is for first-time papermakers.  REC Retreats will introduce you to the equipment and the basic process, and you will spend most of the workshop experimenting and making your own handmade paper.

You will have the freedom (and encouragement) to play with different ingredients: What will your paper look like if you add coffee grounds? Do you prefer the look of thread pieces or yarn bits in your paper? Are you a purist, and want to create paper with color and texture uniformity?

Inspiration is all around us, if one would only stop, look and listen.

How does a writer create? Internationally-known multi-genre fiction author and anthology editor, Mitzi Szereto, will lay the groundwork for writers and aspiring writers to unlock their creativity. She will provide a hands-on approach to finding inspiration and help participants channel that inspiration into structured pieces of writing.

Open to all levels of writers and conducted in a supportive workshop environment, you’ll be given a variety of writing exercises, with opportunities to share your writing in a relaxed setting. By the end of the day, you will have plenty of new ideas and enough material to use as jumping-off points for one or more finished pieces.

Take a break from writing and enjoy a catered, gourmet lunch; breathe in the sea air and marvel at the natural island surroundings; relax and unwind with a glass of wine by the fireplace at the end of the day.

Be an Earth steward and garden artist!

Francie Hansen, environmental artist, will be leading the group in an “upcycling” sculpture project. Francie specializes in “making something out of nothing” and she uses all “found objects” in her art. She loves working with fiber, creating fetish dolls and stuffed animals a la Maurice Sendak or Dr. Seuss. Her studio is located near Friday Harbor, San Juan Island, Washington.

This class is about the process just as much as the product. Experiment and explore!  A wide variety of materials and methods will result in sculptures that vary as much as their makers!

Learn to make artisan chocolate truffles like a professional!

Make your own delicious chocolates under the guidance of expert chocolatier, Tammy Immer, of Island Chocolates. Participants will take home a gift box of 10-12 of these beautiful truffles.

Tammy will share tricks and tools of the trade, she will display her favorite ingredients and she will point out “dos” and “don’ts”. After instruction, everyone will be turned loose to make their own truffles.

Using four of her most popular recipes – raspberry white chocolate, sea salt milk chocolate caramel, dark chocolate coconut and dark chocolate mocha – Tammy will show you how to melt chocolate properly, roll and dip candies for an edible piece of art!
